VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN RUSSIAN INVASION

“To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.”

Nelson Mandela, South African civil rights activisthttps://www.amnesty.org.uk/15-inspiring-human-rights-quotes

Human Rights

Based on human dignity, some basic rights are imparted to every human being. Irrespective of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, all human beings are entitled to certain basic rights.

Human Rights

It includes

  • Right to life and liberty
  • Freedom from slavery and torture,
  • Freedom of opinion and expression,
  • Right to work and education

No matter who starts the war, innocent civilians are the ones who have to pay the price with their lives. Russian invasion has consequences where people of Ukraine are suffering from the fear of death and pain of being ripped off from a peaceful life. Many people have been deprived of their Basic Human Rights.

War Atrocities denying Human Rights

Atrocities happened since the early ages of human existence. It still happens when people consider themselves civilized.

My Lai massacre, Vietnam
March 16,1968 was one such unfortunate day for people of Son Tinh District of Vietnam. This barbaric massacre was called as Mỹ Lai massacre was. Between 347 and 504 unarmed people were killed by U.S Army soldiers. Men, women, children, infants all were brutally killed. women were Gang raped.

Bangladesh Genocide
In 1971, when Pakistan was trying to take back East Pakistan by suppressing Bengali people and denying the victory of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Pakistan Army killed 300,000 to 3000,000 people and several women were Raped. This eventually led to freedom of Bangladesh with the help of Indian Army. Sheikh Mujibur Rehman became the first President of Bangladesh. (ref 1971 Bangladesh genocide)

Islamic State In IRAQ
At its height, Islamic State controlled major portion of Iraq and some parts of Syria. The barbaric act along with killings of innocent people and capturing women as sex slaves was normal for them along with burning alive a syrian airforce pilot. US Army put a strong resistance by eliminating ISIS from major parts of Iraq and Syria .

RUSSIAN INVASION

The invasion of Ukraine has already resulted in Russian strikes on residential areas, medical institutions, and social infrastructure. This resulted in mass displacement. people running for their lives to neighboring countries.

Russian Invasion

Since 2014, the situation in Ukraine was volatile after Russia annexed Crimea, a south eastern Ukrainian province

Russian invasion resulted in multiple acts of aggression, violence, violation of international laws, denial of basic human rights to Ukrainian citizens. Several War crimes were committed against the civilians in its attempt to free Donetsk and Luhansk.

1-Mass Murders of civilians
The fight to control Ukraine resulted in attacks on Residential and civilian areas of Ukraine. Satellite images and Drone pictures covered the mass murders of civilians in Bucha, Ukraine. The mass graves and dead bodies with hands tied was clear evidence of the atrocities done on them.

2-Attacks on civilian targets
Use of chemical weapons, along with other completely prohibited weapons and consistent bombardments of residential places clearly reflected the desperation Russia showed to take complete control of Ukraine.

3- Rape of woman
The rape crimes committed by Russian military are confirmed from the reports of international human rights watch and Amnesty International.

4-Abduction of civilians
According to media reports, when Ukrainian army recaptured the area, they found people in basements, in illegal detention. People were captured randomly.

5-Destruction of medical infrastructure
During War period, medial facilities play a vital role in helping of war victims. Russian missile strikes on significant medical facilities and hospitals is sufficient to uncover the inhuman face of Russian Army.

6-Ill treatment of Prisoners of War
International laws have laid down certain rules and regulations on treatment of Prisoners of War. A Violation of these rules come under the category of war crimes. Many such unfortunate instances have happened in past,e.g Iraq Abu Gharib prison. Russian war is also no exception to it.

Russian President’s move to protect its borders from NATO Army has culminated in the violation of several humanitarian laws as well as has resulted a breach of international laws. Though responsibility lies on Russia, the role of west can’t be denied. They were all involved in was escalation by sending their weapons. As India made it very clear that only peace talks can mitigate war.
